What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a physician (medical doctor) with a specialization in psychiatry, which generally refers to the study, assessment, and treatment of psychiatric illness. Treatment of choice is mostly Pharmacotherapy (Psychotropic Medication), often augmented by psychotherapy.

In Ontario, a Psychologist or a Psychological Associate holds a Doctoral or Masters degree respectively, and they specialize in a particular field of psychology. At Gouws & Associates we provide clinical psychological services, which has as a focus the study of the structure and function of the brain and related behaviour and/or mental processes. A psychologist does not prescribe medications but the treatment of choice is psychotherapy (also sometimes referred to as "Talk" Therapy).

There is an overlap in the services provided by both professions. However psychotic illnesses, which includes schizophrenia and severe mood disorders, are treated primarily by psychiatrists as medication is usually the main focus of treatment .

For more information on what Psychologists do, please visit the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) website.

Do I need a referral?

OHIP does not cover Psychological services, therefore a physician referral is not required, however some extended health carriers require such a referral. We strongly advise that you contact your insurance company regarding this requirement.

In the case of Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), the Nurse Case Manager would often make the referral, or may request a referral from your family physician if your claim includes psychological injury.

In the case of a motor vehicle accident, should any of your health care providers express concern about your psychological status, they can be requested to make a referral on your behalf.

Self referrals are in order and if a need for a physician for referral this will be discussed at the time of the first contact.
